Objectives


The objectives of the Introduction to Social and Emotional Learning course are for participants to:
  
• Gain an understanding of the role SEL can play in supporting the whole child; 
• Become familiar with strategies and resources to support SEL; 
• Recognize SEL as an essential and effective instructional approach. 
• Empower school and district leaders to implement SEL initiatives in their orgs


Implementing SEL initiatives in your school or distric t can be a challenge — whether you’re looking to improve your school climate, integrate SEL lesson plans into traditional academic work, or partner with community organizations to meet goals, gaining momentum to influence real change can be difficult. 

This entirely online course will introduce new practitioners to the core principles and key concepts behind Social Emotional Learning (SEL).  Participants will engage in weekly online discussions, submit assignments virtually, and leverage the power of social digital learning to model best practices, provide feedback to fellow course participants, and self-reflect on their own practice.

Participants will meet the objectives listed above through a combination of the following activities in this course: 
• Video presentations 
• Quizzes 
• Attendance and participation in the online group discussion.
• Deliberate Practice

Instructor Bios


Christopher Smith

Christopher first became interested in SEL when completing his Bachelor of Science degree at West Virginia University. After graduating in 1993 he immediately began work with the SC Department of Education. By 2000 he was a Supervisor/Senior educator in the program where he continued to develop his skills in the areas of verbal behavior, errorless teaching, skill assessment, curriculum planning, and behavioral interventions.
